Scrum Practices Gain Popularity in the Philippines

Monday, September 27, 2010

Agile methodologies continue to gain ground in the Philippines with the fifth Certified Scrum Master training course held at the Hotel Sofitel in Manila last September 2 and 3. Facilitating the event were two premiere Agile coaches, Finnish coach Jukka Lindstrom and Japan-based American coach Emerson Mills.

The course tackled in detail the role of the Scrum master, obstacles, and organizational changes when using Scrum, as well as various scenarios that illustrated the appropriate application of the methodology. Through the interactive style of the two facilitators, the attending IT practitioners were able to understand how to best use Scrum in their respective professions, thus increasing productivity and improving the ability to respond to customer needs. On top of this, attendees were also given the chance to present their questions and personal situations experienced while using Scrum in order to be led to a solution by the facilitating Agile coaches.

Attendees of the Certified Scrum Master training course range from software developers, programmers, and project managers of the IT industry’s leading companies who are looking to gain a deeper understanding of Scrum. According to attendees, many of their clients are either already using the methodology or are interested in using it with the goal of increasing productivity. The last training course was attended by such companies as Ideyatech, SQME Professional, ProV International, HP NexUS, and Macquarie. By far, Scrum seems to be getting good results, as Maricris Nonato of DevEx attests. “I think it’s working well for us,” she claims. “The turnaround of every sprint cycle is good. By far I haven’t had a failed sprint yet. And our stakeholders are happy. You know the transparency thing that scrum promotes is very helpful for them. Scrum is really working out for us.”

Anybody who wants to learn Scrum will greatly benefit from attending the course, as several companies can affirm. All attendees will automatically become a certified Scrum master and be recognized worldwide by the Scrum Alliance.
